Village Life & Culture – Half Day Tour

  • After breakfast, your guide will pick you up from your guesthouse around 9:00 AM. You’ll hop on a traditional becak or motorbike and head out of Bukit Lawang, riding through peaceful countryside and scenic rice fields with the Leuser jungle as your backdrop.
  • Along the way, feel free to stop and watch how locals grow rice in the fields. In the village, you’ll visit small home industries where locals make tofu and brown sugar using traditional methods. You’ll also explore the village on foot—see rubber and cocoa plantations, pass green rice paddies, and meet friendly locals going about their daily lives.
  • Women in the village will show you traditional crafts, like weaving palm leaves into roofs (atap) and making bamboo walls (tepas) used in village homes. It’s a great way to learn how things are still done the old-fashioned way.
  • If your tour falls on a Friday or Sunday, you’ll also get to visit the colorful local market, full of spices, veggies, and tropical fruits like snake fruit, rambutan, and langsat. Don’t hesitate to try something new!
  • To refresh, enjoy a drink—fresh coconut water or something else cool—before heading back.
  • Your guide will return you to your guesthouse around noon or 1:00 PM. Want to try a local lunch before heading back? Just let your guide know—they’ll be happy to take you to a recommended spot. (Lunch not included.)
