Jungle Trekking FAQ
Our jungle trek takes you deep into the rainforest of Bukit Lawang, where you’ll have the chance to see wild orangutans and other incredible wildlife in their natural habitat. Along the way, you’ll walk through tropical forest trails, cross small rivers, enjoy scenic viewpoints, and learn about the jungle from experienced local guides.
Most treks usually begin in the morning, depending on the package you choose and weather conditions. For 1-day treks, you will normally return in the afternoon. For overnight or multi-day treks, you will come back on the final day, usually after trekking and river tubing back to Bukit Lawang.
The trek can be easy, moderate, or challenging depending on the route and duration you choose. Some parts of the jungle include steep climbs, muddy trails, and uneven terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Our guides will always adjust the pace to the group.
While orangutan sightings can never be guaranteed, Bukit Lawang is one of the best places in the world to see Sumatran orangutans in the wild. During most treks, there is a very good chance of spotting orangutans, along with other wildlife such as Thomas Leaf Monkeys, macaques, gibbons, and tropical birds. Every trek is different, which makes each jungle experience unique and exciting.

Prepare for Your Trip
Bukit Lawang is located around 3 to 4 hours from Medan, the main gateway city in North Sumatra. The easiest way to get here is by private car transfer from Medan, Kualanamu International Airport, or your hotel.
- Private Car: This is the easiest and most comfortable option. Your driver will pick you up directly from the airport or your hotel and take you straight to Bukit Lawang. Along the way, you can always ask for a short stop if you’d like to buy snacks, use the toilet, or take a quick break.
- Shared Car: Shared transport is a more budget-friendly option, although it may be slightly less comfortable than a private car. Pick-up usually takes place from several locations in Medan, so the journey may include a few stops before heading to Bukit Lawang.
- Public Transport: Public transportation is also possible, although we generally recommend it only for more independent travelers. If you plan to travel this way, simply let us know your arrival details and we’ll be happy to guide you to the correct station or departure point.
Once you arrive in Bukit Lawang, our team will be there to welcome you and bring you to your accommodation.
